On November 28, 2023, the new update to the Dictionary of the Spanish Language (DLE), version 23.7, was released.
One of the highlights is that it now includes synonyms and antonyms (though not for every entry), which will be very useful for those who consult the academic dictionary.
It also includes terms such as “big data,” “cookie ,” and “banner,” among many others from fields such as science, gastronomy, and new technologies…
In the list of new items, we found four terms marked as originating from Guatemala, specifically the following:
- baguette (a long, narrow loaf of bread)
- fúrico, adj. (furious ‖ feeling fury).
- incumbent (a person who holds a prominent public office)
- palitroque (a typically cylindrical piece of bread that is very thin and crispy)
One term that particularly catches my attention is the inclusion of “toxic,” defined as follows: “Having a harmful or pernicious influence on someone. A toxic boyfriend. A toxic relationship.”
